As defined by the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, the Moosehead Lake Region ( region E ) lies in the west central portion of Maine bordering on its west side the province of Quebec. In its 4400 square miles of territory there are 625 ponds and lakes over 10 acres amounting to over a quarter million acres of productive water. With Moosehead Lake being Maine?s largest body of water at 75,000 acres. This all totals 24% of Maine?s lakes and ponds. There is also 336 miles of mainstream river with an additional 3847 miles of tributaries. 13% of the states total. Of this lie the headwaters to the Kennebec, Penobscot, & St. John Rivers. With 2 % of Maine?s total population and 20 % of the states total fishery you can easily leave the crowds behind. In summary one can easily fish a new piece of water every day all season long and not come close to covering all the water available to be fished.
